Black Swan

Dylan, Erica, Jer, and I all ventured to a late night showing of Black Swan last night. After seeing it, we all were in agreement...it is a fantastic movie with great shots, talent, and dancing. While the story line has been done 1000 times, Darren Aronofsky really made it his own by turning Swan Lake into a thriller and having Natalie Portman literally transform into her evil side, or her own Black Swan. The entire movie was suspenseful, as you were never quite sure when a painting on the wall would start to move or a reflection in a mirror would become its own self. You can easily connect with Portman's terror as she starts to realize that things are not really as they seem and the movie will keep you guessing what is real and what is imagined up until the very end. The movie is up for a ridiculous number of awards...4 Golden Globes, 3 Screen Actors Guild awards, 5 Gotham Awards, and many more with 2 BSFC Awards already won. It's no wonder why the movie is getting so much success...if you haven't seen it, you really ought to!

After that, we went back to Jer's house for awhile where we talked about the movie and how good coffee sounded....so we eventually wound up at the diner. Erica hadn't been there since she returned home, so we wanted to make sure that she got her diner fill before she had to leave again. Despite the random crowd of people at 2a.m. on a Thursday, I think the trip was a success.

Eduard Erlikh

In one of my fashion illustration classes, we touched upon a pretty cool artist by the names of Eduard Erlikh. He is known for his vibrant colored watercolor paintings. His silhouettes are high fashion and the color combinations are always interesting and creative. The prints that he includes add some great depths to his work without being too overbearing. He has some rather well known clients such as Vogue USA, Vogue Japan, Marie Claire France, Bazar Japan, and more. I haven't been able to find too much else out about this guy, but his artwork pretty much speaks for itself.

My Favorite Gift

Dylan was extremely thoughtful and bought me a camera for Christmas this year. He claimed that I deserved a better one than I had, as he likes my photos best above any creative thing I do. I couldn't complain, as having a new gadget is always a treat. :) Since receiving it, I have been experimenting with all of the different settings, trying to get a real for for how everything works. The following are my positive results:

Notice Dylan's awesome new cardigan. Erica got it for him as a christmas present. How spot on was she?

Giles Deacon

I stumbled upon Giles Deacon's site the other day and was browsing through the collections. I came upon the 2011 Spring RTW collection and was so impressed! The outfits were fun but sophisticated, perfect for someone with a sense of imagination. The patterns were bold and varied, the colors bold and crisp. The makeup and varied sunglasses were also a great touch to the show and really added a lot to the collection as a whole.

Colors of the stars

I have been so busy lately..school is almost over and the holidays are upon us! I haven't posted in awhile, but I have still been uncovering wonderful artists, movies, and etc. every day. In class the other day I was shown some work by Demetrios Psillos, and I just fell in love. He uses color to create emotion and depth in his paintings, and really has a knack for capturing people. I fell in love with some of his celebrity drawings, so I thought I'd share:

He graduated with a degree in Fashion and was recruited by John Gallino as pattern maker. He moved to New York City two years later. Here, he established a studio and contributed to a number of different household magazines. After a sucessful four years, he returned to London to contribute to British Vogue. Currently, he still contributes to magazines and tutors a life drawing class.

You can go to http://www.demetriopsillos.com/ to see more of his work.

Play Date

Remember how much fun it was to sit down- colored markers in one hand, coloring book in the other- and just go at it? I do. For hours upon hours I would draw anything and everything. My imagination would take over and I would be in my own little world.

Well, ladies and gents, I invite you to relive your childhood moments..through fashion.

Michiel Schurrman, a graphic designer, and Berber Soepboer, a fashion designer have collaborated on a dress that you can color yourself. Sounds fun? That's because it is. What a simple way to own a one-of-a-kind garment, and you even get to help in the creation of it!

The only way that this idea could get any better is to add in some temporary inks. They only offer permanent textile markers with the dress, but being able to recreate the design and colors over and over would be a lot of fun. The dress would never become dated that way!

Another set of dresses that came to be with this collaboration are the assembly dresses. There are three different dresses in the line and they can all be taken apart and combined in a variety of different ways with buttons. This leaves it open for endless possibilities when you get dressed in the morning.

I wish that they had a couple of solid prints to pair with the dresses, but maybe that is a future project for the duo to work on.
All in all, this post is just a shoutout to all the other dreamers and imagination dwelling people out there......it feels good to know that your childhood drawings just might pay off in the future.

Mats Gustafson

This guy is pretty fabulous. His career skyrocketed in the late 70s, when the world of fashion was ruled by photography. Using water colors and simple paper cutouts, he pushed his imagination to its furthest corners, opening new doors and windows for the art world. Mats' work is always very elegant, with subdued color palletes and classy silhouettes. Maybe its just the Halloween spirit creeping in, but his work also seems to have a kind of eeriness that I can't get enough of.

This one is my personal favorite. Everything is so simple but SO sophisticated.

He did a campaign of somesort awhile back that showcases his love for black (which is fairly obvious after seeing the above picture). Below are some of his drawings from that campaign:

Heart Shaped Box

Last week, Henry, Eliza, Dylan, and I went to our local Goodwill to shop around. Eliza and I stormed the women's section, while the boys went off to try and find a birthday vest for Henry. (Oddly enough, Dylan walked out with a vest but Henry did not). While browsing through the color-coded racks, I found the mother of all Nirvana shirts....for three bucks. I was pleased. No, more than pleased...estatic. The little voice in my head that normally screams at me to let the impulse by go and think things through had no words. I guess she was just as thrilled as I was.

I don't have a picture of the shirt itself, but I always like a good action shot better anyway.

Lovisa Burfitt

Lovisa Burfitt is a swedish illustrator, known for drawing hands and feet. She is playful with her work, which I absolutely love.
You can find more of her work here.

Egon Schiele

I've been loving this man lately. His lines are magical.

The start.

Hello.
I've been slowly building up a collection of inspiring photos, music, words, poems, and other media throughout the past little while. Some of it I have done, but most of it is by other fabulous people that I am inspired by. I have decided to start a blog where I can place all of these wonderful items for other people to enjoy, and for me to look back on. I'm not saying that it will necessarily be interesting for everyone, but hopefully everyone will be able to take away something from this experience. I'll be posting events that happen to me personally, such as photos and music, along with famous works of art and other things that I am interested in at the current moment.

Enjoy!
